I have met a few cases of one-man-made-wonders one it comes to games. For example ZUN with the Touhou series. He composed the music to the levels, he made the character designs etc. so it is a very nice example. Right now, I have something to show you, another one-man-made game, Woodle Tree Adventures. Will it be as good as I expect? Let’s find out!

So, the intro sequence shows us the Great Deku Tree(?) … Oh, sorry, so, a father tree or something like that and his son, Woodle. The father tells his son to collect fairy tears and fruits, so the world can be saved from thirst. Okay, I guess? Not something I usually do when it comes to quests in video games.
The gameplay is simple: Woodle has to collect as many fruits as possible, altogether with three fairy tears which we have to deposit on a shrine-like thing at the end of each level.
There’s also a cute feature while collecting fruits: the more we pick up, the bigger our little ruck sack gets. However, when meeting with enemies during collecting stuff, the only weapon we use is a leaf –which can be upgraded later on. The problem with this leaf-attack is that there’s no concrete hit-detection of the enemies. If an enemy touches or attacks you, you die and restart the level from the beginning which can be frustrating after a while.
The graphics are simple and cute in their own way, but the camera controls terribly. Sure, we can use the camera to zoom in and out on a level, but we can’t turn it around so sometimes when it comes to platforming, our jumps are kind of like a „leaps of faith”.
The controls are okay, but the for the platforming parts it can be hard, especially while jumping from platform to platform. The physics of this game are kind of bubbly, everything feels like a soft marshmallow, not to mention that there’s a cute glitch which we can perform to make Woodle jump upside down on his head.
The music on each level is relaxing and has simplistic melodies, I liked to listen to them, but it’s not the kind of music I would listen to anytime.
Completing the game is easy, the more berries we have the more unlockables we can get: upgraded leaves, new levels and of course: Steam achievements. Also, a second player can join this short adventure as a beaver, which is good to help out Player 1 but the beaver is so big that Woodle can be pushed down easily when jumping platform to platform.
Overall: Woodle Tree Adventures is a short platforming game, with cute graphics, but with sloppy controls and bad camera handling. It’s good for a try or for one playthrough either in single or 2-player mode, but nothing more.
Platform: PC (Steam)
Year: 2014.
